The iPad

The iPod, the iMac, the iPhone, now the iPad.

Here are my thoughts:

- Apple is convinced that there is a middle market between the laptop and the smartphone. A portable device that can be your word processor, e-mail client, media player, and internet browser, that you intereact with everywhere you go.

- Apple believes that the way we interact with traditional media (newspapers, magazines, and books) has changed forever, and the iPad is the vehicle for that change.

- Apple believes that touch interfaces are the future and the success of the iPhone has given them the ability to expand that belief into a fully functional computer that is an all encompassing mobile device.

- Starting the price at $499 is a genius move that puts pressure on everyone from netbook makers, to Kindle producers, to smartphone providers. Every segment of the technological world has to compete with a suite of Apple products.

What do you think?

I think the pricing decision was brilliant. Most analysts expected anywhere from $800 - $1000, but $500 will attract significantly more customers. I plan on buying one myself, only question is to wait until they make some improvements or lower the price even further.

It seems Apple and their app/itunes stores are trying to get a piece of the search market that google dominates. I'm interested to see how that market plays out over the next few years.

If you're in the markets, the derivative play on the ipad is to buy makers of "man purses". Dudes gotta carry it around somehow, and girls already have 10 purses on avg :)

Lastly, my one HUGE problem with the iPad is the name. Jane Wells from CNBC hits it dead on in her blog!

The name iPad, as you can imagine, has stirred up many jokes about it sounding like a feminine hygiene product. As hard as it would be to believe that men could not make this connection, it begs the question, are there women in the marketing department for Apple? Or anywhere in upper management at all?

So this begs the question. What would have been a better name. iPad follows the iPod, iPhone naming convention (they are big fans of "P"). Any thoughts?

iSlate or iTablet or MacBook Touch or something else???

I was never any good at marketing, but I think the iSlate sounds better. Whatever the name, the product is going to be awesome and I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Perhaps they should have gone with iPro. In reality, it's just a name. (maybe it should be iProse, since a prose is just a prose)
